The “Petersville Regatta” was conducted by Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron over 4 days 27-30th December 2023.
MCYS had two of our boats sailing – John Gordon with “E’Toile” and John Hall with Wingara II.
Once again, BYS put on a great regatta with varying winds – everything from light to strong winds! The flat water and tides make this regatta always a test of every boat and skipper.
The results are in with E’toile sailed by John Gordon and MCYS members Gareth Davies and Michael Squires and Tim Pepperell amongst others, and Wingara II sailed by John Hall with MCYS members Andrew Arblaster and Malcolm Elsworth and in two races by new member Andrew Hall.
E’toile on the breeze!
Wingara II on a broad reach.
Here are the results:
On the Australian Measurement System (AMS):
On Performance handicap (PHS):
The racing was challenging with the first twilight race conducted in the Sorrento Channel with a shifty breeze and an outgoing tide meaning some tacking was required to get through the pinch points. At one stage Wingara II made only a number of meters for two tacks such was the racing tide!
The final race was in a heavy breeze and tested all crews and boats.
John Gordon scored a 2nd in PHS in Race 3 – well done! On AMS E’toile scored a second, a third and two fourths – a great effort!
Wingara II scored a first (“Bullet”) in PHS in race 2 and a second (by less than a minute) in race 5.
Wingara II likes a heavier breeze – after all she is a cruising boat about to do the circumnavigation of Tasmania in the VDLC 2024 starting from Hobart on 14th February, 2024.
On AMS (fixed rating rather than a variable performance handicap Wingara II scored a first, three seconds and two thirds.
Well done to BYS for a another great Petersville Regatta and to all MCYS members who competed – particularly all crew on Wingara II for a fine effort.
As you can see from the results the racing was very close!
Cheers
John Hall
